My fiance’s aunt, who’s been retired for several years now, made a big purchase recently. But it wasn’t a new, big-screen TV or a trip to the Bahamas or a Cadillac CTS.
She purchased an iPad.
This is significant for a number of reasons, one being that she’s never owned an Apple product in her life. Now, I haven’t seen any purchasing statistics on this particular Apple device, but my gut tells me that a lot of people who purchase it are Apple fan boys and girls who have been using the company’s products for years. Steve Jobs is pretty good at making us believe that we can’t live without his devices.
It’s also significant because she uses it. Every day. She checks her e-mail and plays casino-type games and surfs YouTube videos. She’s been using a computer her entire life, but she’s never been one to buy the latest and greatest gadgets. The iPad was impressive enough to pique her curiosity, and now she’s integrated it into her daily life.
She loves that it’s easy to use, and that she can take it with her anywhere — whether she’s in the bedroom or on a flight to Copenhagen.
She also shares her iPad with her elderly mother, who, outside of carrying a pre-paid cell phone in her purse for emergencies, never met a piece of technology she liked. But her mom also appreciates its ease-of-use, and also plays games on the touch screen device.
I’m impressed by this mini iPad case study because, not only would I never have imagined that Aunt Marsha would have this device on her radar, let alone invest the hundreds of dollars it costs to purchase it, but that it’s so easy to use that she sings its praises every single time we see her. It’s changed the way she goes about her business, and is a testament to the ingenuity — and simplicity — that Apple has created with its revolutionary products.
