I’d like to spin back around for a moment to the DoshDosh.com article Erica mentioned earlier this week. She made some fantastic points about social news Web sites, concerns about gaming and citizen journalism.
Titled “A Beginner’s Guide to Social News Sites” the piece did an amazing job of detailing why sites like Digg, Delicious, StumbleUpon and so many many others are useful – and beyond that, how we can find the ones that suit our our own interests. Like anything else, though, they are communities, and they only function through participation.
Social News websites generally operate via a wisdom of the crowds principle; groups of individuals with different points of views are able to collectively determine the value or importance of content disseminated through the community. The users are given the editorial power to influence the visibility of content.
When you consider that kind of power, it’s important to use your time and efforts efficiently. Do your homework. Choose social news sites that suit the content you’re creating. If it’s highly focused on entertainment you may want to look into Showhype, the article encourages. If it’s primarily Internet marketing related, Sphinn is for you. You don’t need to be everywhere.
At The Urbane Way, we’re testing out new ground to see what works for a variety of clients. We’ll let you know what we find out. Try it for yourself.
Here are seven questions to ask:
- Are there many comments for each news story?
- How many votes are needed to reach the frontpage?
- What is the frequency of new story submissions?
- What is the date of stories on the frontpage? Are they fresh?
- How many members are there? How active are the top users?
- Is the topical focus of the community relevant to your niche/site?
- Do you agree with the site’s Terms of Service?
