I was pleased to see a really informative new video this morning, created by Hajj Flemings. Check out his Tech MBA program post and his interview with Zingerman’s CEO Ari Weinzweig here. Flemings does a great job of taking us behind the scenes at a veritable Ann Arbor institution.
What began 28 years ago as Zingerman’s Deli has since spawned multiple successful businesses. Zingerman’s – still known for impeccable quality started with four employees, 25 seats in the college town and a mere 1,300 square feet.
It now boasts 500 employees and was the impetus behind new businesses like Zingerman’s Bakehouse, Zingerman’s Creamery – where you can get fresh cheese and gelato – a coffee roasting business, wholesale and mail order programs, a candy manufacturer, Zingerman’s Roadhouse serving up American cuisine and of course ZingTrain, a training program all their own.
It’s truly Zingerman’s approach to business and growth that earns the company plenty of attention these days. And in the interview, Weinzweig attributes that success to their approach with employees and the ZingTrain program.
The business, worth an estimated $35 million, uses an Open Book Finance system that empowers all employees through participatory seminars that encourage them to “think like owners,” Weinzweig said. “If you come clear with what success looks like, there’s a higher chance of getting there,” he added.
That really resonated with me. You have to know where you’re going to reach your goal, don’t you? And empowering your staff with that knowledge and those leadership skills can only be beneficial in the long run.
What sort of training does your company offer? What sort of training have you received that you found helpful in the past?
