Content and keywords, making it all make sense

We’re busy over here at Urbane Camp creating content non-stop. As such, we think a lot about keywords. How and when to incorporate them. It didn’t come naturally to me so I spend time referring back and re-thinking how best to word things. Sometimes I need a reminder. And I don’t mind admitting that.

That’s why I was pleased to run across this post today, SEO Secrets with Ann Smarty at Blogher.com. It’s loaded with great advice and tips for bloggers about building traffic. But the social media marketing questions caught my eye.

So much rang so true:

People link to you because you are in the same social media community. It’s about mutual interests, benefit and collaboration.

Besides, Google has been actively implementing social media in the algorithm. For example, it has included “real-time” (Twitter) search in its search results as well as the results from your social media circle. That being said, Google should be already implementing social media mentions, links, etc in the algorithm and will soon do that officially.

By being “socialized,” you and your brand get visibility. So that social media presence affects your search standing both directly and indirectly.

Ann Smarty also admits in the interview, she isn’t one for keyword density, but rather for content that’s readable.

You may think about keyword prominence though. This is putting your keyword in the most prominent places of the page: i.e. title, tag, headings, etc. Those help Google to identify your important keywords and help the user to quickly scan your pages and understand what they are about.

What are some of the most efficient and reader-friendly ways you’ve used keywords?
