At an early age, Jeff Pulver was exposed to ham radio – and what it was like to connect to people you hadn’t met but felt like you knew.
He was hooked. Considering it a pre-cursor to social media, the founder of the 140 Character Conference easily draws comparisons to those early days on the radio and his use of Twitter.
“When someone tweets me, I feel like they’re talking to me,” Pulver said during a recent meet and greet at Birmingham’s Urbane Space. “On the radio, I felt connected to people.”
And he is. Pulver shared several stories of how his social network has served him and others in ways small and large. On the day before the first 140 Characters Conference one tweet he sent asking for help to set up resulted in six strangers assisting him, several of him stayed throughout the conference.
“It’s the people’s voice that matters,” said Pulver. As his first conference was fast approaching, he found himself in a panic. He worried what would happen if Twitter were sold. He pondered about what the conference itself would mean and then he determined that the root of it all was exploring the “State of Now,” instantaneous access to information and news and the real time Web.
Now, the 140 Characters Conference has spread from its roots in New York City to Los Angeles to Washington DC to Tel Aviv and will host its first event in Detroit Oct. 20. “When people said I should come to Detroit, I came,” said Pulver. “There is no better place to do an event than here.”
Now it’s up to us to make sure the 140 Characters Conference Detroit – set at the Fillmore – is a success. So tell your friends and colleagues. And come on out in support. Tickets to the event will be $140, or $100 for an early bird pass- visit detroit2010.140conf.com for updates. Interested speakers can still submit an application online here.
