Last Night we were pleased to welcome Jeff Pulver founder of the 140 Characters Conference to Urbane Space in Birmingham for an informal Meet & Greet session hosted by Social Media Club Detroit. Pulver will bring his conference for the first time to Detroit this Fall. We can’t wait.
“We’re living in a time of hyper-connectedness,” said Pulver his dry sense of humor shining. “You know more about people you don’t care about.. and it’s about to get worse.”
The 140 Characters Conference is meant to provide a platform for the Twitter community to listen, connect, share and engage, all while exploring the effects of real-time Internet on business. The theme will be Exploring the State of Now.
Pulver considers Now Media to be a fusion of new and old media. For him, the Obama inauguration was a turning point. The adoption of real-time information blended with news changed the game completely. Twitter became a media platform. Pulver is both a dynamic and humble speaker. He shares stories with a crowd as if he’s known them for years. It was a pleasure to hear him discuss how the conference came about and has gone from New York City to a worldwide phenomenon (something we’ll share in future posts).
For now, suffice it to say, the Detroit event is in the works and will feature 50-70 speakers. On Oct. 19, Pulver will plan a Day of Giving to benefit area schools and hospitals, a way of benefiting the community at large. We’ll keep you posted as everything surrounding Detroit’s 140 Characters Conference Develops.
To ensure it is a success, and the first of many, a few things need to happen before the big day, Oct. 20.
All those interested in offering support, either assistance in helping to secure speakers or serving as sponsors to move toward the goal should reach out to organizers or send e-mail to jeff@140conf.com.
And most importantly, help get the word out. Tickets to the event will be $140, or $100 for an early bird pass- visit detroit2010.140conf.com for updates.
Mark your calendars for Oct. 20 and get ready to head over to the Fillmore Detroit, the newly chosen venue. Interested speakers can still submit an application online here.
